“What do I do when death occurs?” is one of the most common questions we receive. While this time can be overwhelming, please remember we are here to help. First call the funeral home. Then begin contacting family, closest friends and other important people. You may need to consider also contacting their place of employment and ultimately the life insurance company (if applicable). Obituaries are used in several ways, and the length and content of each may vary.
Gone are the days of boilerplate funerals, where the service was the same regardless of who was being honored. Instead, today’s funerals and memorial services offer nearly endless options to honor your loved one.
Nearly every death impacts a child—whether it’s the death of a parent, grandparent, distant relative or favorite pet. So when a death affects a child close to you, we believe it is important to talk to the child in honest, age-appropriate terms and provide them a safe place for their questions and concerns.
Flowers, memorial gifts, casseroles, visits, calls and prayers – the outpouring of love families receive after the death of a loved one is tremendously appreciated. And with the gifts comes the responsibility to write thank you notes.
When a loved one passes away, a speech or eulogy is given at the memorial service. This is a chance to celebrate the deceased’s life and memory.
Families often choose to honor a Veteran with military funeral honors. This tribute, consisting of the playing of Taps, flag folding, and presentation of the flag, is led by a two-person detail representing the Veteran’s branch of service.
